Memories of rural life in his hometown Vitebsk featured in Chagall’s art since his early days as an artist. The farmers and merchants, as well as the jugglers and musicians who regularly passed through, define the image of the small town, as well as many of the artist’s paintings. Jewish life in the otherwise orthodox White Russia was his regular subject matter. This is a village scene, showing a farmer with his calf before the ritual slaughter; in the background are the typical, single-storey farmhouses. This is a very painterly depiction, replete with local details and executed in warm earth tones

Erläuterungen

Erinnerungen an das rurale Leben in seiner Heimatstadt Witebsk finden sich seit den Anfängen in Chagalls Kunst. Bauern und Kaufleute, aber auch die regelmässig vorbeischauenden Gaukler und Musikanten prägten das Bild der Kleinstadt - und auch viele Bilder des Künstlers. Das jüdische Leben im sonst orthodoxen Weissrussland wird regelmässig thematisiert. Hier eine Dorfszene, ein Bauer mit seinem Kalb vor dem Ritualakt, im Hintergrund die charakteristischen, einstöckigen Bauernhäuser. Eine sehr malerische Darstellung, kraftvoll mit vielen zeichnerischen Details umgesetzt, in warmen Erdtönen
