On beige handmade paper, lower left, top left and top right with old folds in the paper, at the edges small isolated tears, on the back traces of an old mount. Fresh in colours and in immaculate overall condition

Commentaires

Chagall dedicated many pictures to the subjects of love and family. The lovers and child here float above the village square of Vitebsk on a horse at dusk, a farewell as they move into a new world and time. A vibrant floral bouquet, is a clear reference to the great source of inspiration provided by this old homeland. The riding family, based on the iconography of the Holy Family, is similarly a symbol of the artist and his family’s own, unstable and constantly shifting circumstances. Chagall beautifully elaborates each individual element on the boldly painted, bright blue background in wide brush strokes. In the sky above we can see the setting red sun and the shadowy mystical animal, the symbol of inspiration in the artist’s œuvre; on the street below, a fish swims away in a carefully composed little picture story

Erläuterungen

Marc Chagall widmete dem Topos der Liebe und der Familie zahlreiche Bilder. Das Liebespaar mit Kind auf dem Pferd schwebt in der Dämmerung über dem Dorfplatz von Witebsk, ein Abschied in eine neue Welt und Zeit. Ein Blumenbouquet, fast wie ein Feuerwerk, zeugt von der grossen Inspirationsquelle der alten Heimat. Die reitende Familie, die sich ikonographisch an die "Heilige Familie" anlehnt, ist auch Symbol für die eigenen, unsteten und sich dauernd verändernden Lebensumstände des Künstlers und seiner Familie. Auf dem in breiten Pinselstrichen, sehr frei gemalten, kräftig blauen Grund, arbeitet Chagall die einzelnen Elemente wunderbar heraus. Oben über der untergehenden, roten Sonne, schemenhaft das "mystische Tier", das im Œuvre des Künstlers für die Inspiration schlechthin steht, unten auf der Strasse ein Fisch davonschwimmend, eine eindrücklich komponierte Bildgeschichte
