Condition

On strong, laid paper. Torn nail holes in the lower corners. Traces of old mounting on the back. Very fresh in colour and in perfect overall condition

Commentaires

Irène Staub (1952-1989), called Lady Shiva, was one of the most colourful figures in Zurich in the 1970s and 1980s. She was the muse of various artists, a fashion icon and a prostitute. Franz Gertsch painted her in 1980, after the paintings of Patti Smith and his iconic self-portrait, as the first large-format, purely female portrait. She was to be followed by Tabea, Verena, Christina and finally Johanna. With "Irène I" he also created his first portrait on paper in 1981, and in the same year he created others with the same model. These works were all in gouache but in different formats. In 1982, he created several more pure watercolours with Irène, practically all in the same format. The present work also belongs to this second series.

The watercolour is very close to the large painting and to "Irène I". The model looks at the viewer from the front; there is a tremendous directness and determination in her gaze. Unlike the painting and the gouache, Gertsch dissolves the transitions more in the watercolour. The picture seems freer and more direct. Watercolour demands the courage to leave surfaces free, and so, for example, the sword-shaped ear pendant shines out next to the red mouth.

The sheet is one of the very rare works on paper and impressively demonstrates the artist's incomparable mastery

Auf festem, handgeschöpftem Papier. In den unteren Ecken Reissnagellöchlein. Rückseitig mit Spuren alter Montierungen. Äusserst farbfrisch und in tadelloser Gesamterhaltung

Erläuterungen

Irène Staub (1952-1989), genannt Lady Shiva, war eine der schillerndsten Figuren im Zürich der 1970er und 1980er Jahre. Sie war Muse verschiedener Künstler, Modeikone und Prostituierte. Franz Gertsch malte sie 1980 nach den Bildern von Patti Smith und seinem ikonischen Selbstbildnis als erstes grossformatiges, reines Frauenporträt. Nach ihr sollten Tabea, Verena, Christina und schliesslich Johanna folgen. Mit "Irène I" entstand 1981 auch das erste Porträt auf Papier, im selben Jahr schuf er noch weitere mit demselben Modell. Diese Werke waren alle in Gouache aber in unterschiedlichen Formaten angelegt. 1982 entstanden dann noch einige reine Aquarelle mit Irène, praktisch alle in gleichem Format. Zu dieser zweiten Serie zählt auch die vorliegende Arbeit

Das Aquarell ist sehr nahe am grossen Gemälde und an "Irène I" angelegt. Das Modell schaut die Betrachtenden frontal an, eine ungeheure Direktheit und Entschlossenheit liegt in ihrem Blick. Anders als beim Gemälde und der Gouachen löst Gertsch im Aquarell die Übergänge mehr auf. Das Bild wirkt freier und direkter. Aquarell verlangt den Mut, Flächen freizulassen, und so leuchtet denn etwa neben dem roten Mund der schwertförmige Ohranhänger hervor

Das Blatt gehört zu den sehr seltenen Arbeiten auf Papier und zeigt die unvergleichliche Meisterschaft des Künstlers eindrücklich auf
