Commentaires

Picasso often dealt with art-historical models and often quoted them in his own works. He dedicated numerous drawings and paintings to Édouard Manet's "Déjeuner sur l'herbe", created in 1863 and now in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. He also made three linocuts on the subject, whereby the sheet offered here is the main sheet of this group in its colourfulness and compositional layout. The "ant" above the date is anecdotal; it testifies to the artist's sense of humour. One of the master's important linocuts, made in Mougins.

Erläuterungen

Picasso beschäftigte sich oft mit kunsthistorischen Vorbildern und zitierte sie vielfach in eigenen Werken. Dem 1863 entstandenen und sich heute im Musée d'Orsay in Paris befindlichen "Déjeuner sur l'herbe" von Édouard Manet widmete er zahlreiche Zeichnungen und Gemälde. Es entstanden auch drei Linolschnitte zum Thema, wobei das hier angebotene Blatt in seiner Farbenpracht und kompositorischen Anlage das Hauptblatt dieser Gruppe darstellt. Anekdotisch ist die "Ameise" oberhalb der Datierung; sie zeugt vom Humor des Künstlers. Einer der bedeutenden Linolschnitte des Meisters, entstanden in Mougins
