Pastos of oil paint applied with a brush and partly with a palette knife, scattered craquelures. Overall fresh in colour and in very good condition

Commentaires

Alfred Jensen deals with innumerable systems of order and numbers and brings them onto canvas or paper in an unmistakable way. Starting with the insights of the Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras of Samos (around 580 to around 500 BC) and the teachings of the Pythagoreans, he created a series of at least seven works in oil on canvas entitled "Pythagoras" in 1963. Four of these works, including the present one, were shown in the Winterthur exhibition in 2015. In 1964, Jensen dedicated a four-part mural "The Pythagorean Theorem Per I-IV" to Pythagoras' theorem, and in the same year he created a six-part, large-format oil painting entitled "Honor Pythagoras, Per I - Per VI", which is now in the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC. Pythagoras advocated the mystical doctrine of number as the primordial principle of all things and of harmonic order as the highest cosmological law. Erläuterungen

Alfred Jensen setzt sich mit unzähligen Ordnungs- und Zahlensystemen auseinander und bringt diese auf unverkennbare Weise auf Leinwand oder Papier. Ausgehend von den Erkenntnissen des griechischen Philosophen und Mathematikers Pythagoras von Samos (etwa 580 bis etwa 500 v. Chr.) und den Lehren der Pythagoräer, entsteht 1963 eine Serie von mindestens sieben Arbeiten in Öl auf Leinwand mit dem Titel "Pythagoras". Vier dieser Werke, das vorliegende eingeschlossen, waren in der Ausstellung in Winterthur 2015 zu sehen. 1964 widmet Jensen dem Satz des Pythagoras ein vierteiliges Wandbild "The Pythagorean Theorem Per I-IV", im selben Jahr entsteht ein sechsteiliges, grossformatiges Ölgemälde mit dem Titel "Honor Pythagoras, Per I – Per VI", das sich heute im Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington DC befindet. Pythagoras vertrat die mystische Lehre von der Zahl als Urprinzip aller Dinge und von der harmonischen Ordnung als höchstes kosmologisches Gesetz.
