James Lee Byars used the object as part of the performance "The Signature of the Artist", which took place on 31 August 1981 in the park of the villa of Maria and Hans Christoph von Tavel in Bern. Thirty-three invited people took part. On 8 September, he also performed the action in Geneva at the Galerie Claude Givaudan
