Marc Chagall was fascinated by the circus from the very beginning of his artistic career. This fascination probably goes back to his childhood, when he saw travelling troupes perform on the village square in Vitebsk. For the artist, the circus quickly became one of the "metaphors for life", the power of which he channelled into his work until his later years. Here is a very graphicall version of the theme: the "écuyère" (horse performer), surrounded by artists, musicians and the audience, dominates the action, admired by all. The composition is incredibly richly designed, a colourful firework display full of joie of life, which impressively illustrates Chagall's constant will to renew himself into old age.

Marc Chagall war seit seinen künstlerischen Anfängen vom Zirkus fasziniert. Diese Faszination geht wohl auf seine Kindheit zurück, als er in Witebsk Wandertruppen auf dem Dorfplatz auftreten sah. Der Zirkus wurde für den Künstler schnell zu einer der "Metaphern für das Leben", deren Kraft er bis ins Spätwerk in seine Arbeiten einfliessen liess. Hier eine sehr zeichnerisch umgesetzte Version des Themas: Die "Écuyère" (Pferdeartistin), umringt von Artisten, Musikanten und dem Publikum, dominiert, von allen bewundert, das Geschehen. Die Komposition ist unglaublich reich gestaltet, ein farbenfrohes Feuerwerk voller Lebensfreude und Lebenslust, das Chagalls ständigen Erneuerungswillen bis ins hohe Alter eindrucksvoll veranschaulicht.
