Condition

The sheet minimally browned and with some studio and handling traces. Remains of an earlier mounting on the verso. In fine condition

Comments

Probably the result of a visit to the "Aux Ambassadeurs". The well-known Parisian concert venue organised the "café-concerts" - open-air concerts held under the trees of the Champs-Elysées in Paris when the weather was fine. There is evidence that Degas often attended these performances. A very poetic realisation, the mysteriously illuminated singer literally shines out of the dark background. Only two copies of the first state are known: the present one and the one in the Albertina in Vienna.

Das Blatt minimal gebräunt und mit einigen Atelier- und Griffspuren. Rückseitig Reste einer früheren Montierung. In schöner Erhaltung

Erläuterungen

Wohl aufgrund eines Besuchs im "Aux Ambassadeurs" entstanden. Das bekannte Pariser Konzertlokal veranstaltete bei schönem Wetter die "Café-Concerts" - Freiluftkonzerte, die unter den Bäumen der Champs-Elysées in Paris stattfanden. Es ist belegt, dass Degas die Aufführungen oft besuchte. Eine sehr poetische Umsetzung, die geheimnisvoll beleuchtete Sängerin strahlt förmlich aus dem dunklen Hintergrund. Vom vorliegenden I. Zustand sind nur 2 Exemplare bekannt, das andere befindet sich in der Albertina in Wien.
