Commentaires

The monotype is a detailed study after the epochal painting "D'où venons-nous? Que sommes-nous? Où allons-nous?" by Paul Gauguin, which is now in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It depicts a woman squatting to the right of the central figure. The pencil strokes on the reverse are intriguing: the artist has in fact realised the monotype directly as a drawing, using the "copy technique", and applied it to the sheet.

Erläuterungen

Die Monotypie ist eine Detailstudie nach dem 1897-1898 entstandenen epochalen Gemälde "D’où venons-nous? Que sommes-nous? Où allons-nous?" von Paul Gauguin, das sich heute im Museum of Fine Arts in Boston befindet. Dargestellt ist die rechts neben der zentralen Figur hockende Frau. Spannend sind die Bleistiftstriche auf der Rückseite: Der Künstler hat die Monotypie faktisch im "Abklatschverfahren" direkt als Zeichnung umgesetzt und auf das Blatt gebracht.
