One sheet mounted. One sheet with paper loss in the lower right corner and on the reverse with a mirror-inverted image. Mostly with small pin-holes in the corners and with studio traces. In very good condition and fresh in colour

Comments

The works were created as part of the illustrations for Daniel Baud-Bovy's novel "Vacances d'Artistes". The book was published in Geneva in 1909. It contains 27 colour lithographs "hors-texte", 10 by Édouard Baud, 4 by Louis Dunki, 2 by Jules Fontanez, 10 by Giovanni Giacometti and 1 by Édouard Vallet. In August 1907, Giacometti provided the publisher Max Girardet, director of Sonor, with drawings in watercolour over pencil as models for these coloured lithographs. These preparatory works were then transferred onto stone by one of the publisher's lithographers. In addition to the 10 lithographs illustrated in the publication, Giacometti also designed other sheets that were not used in the book (6 of these are listed in Stauffer, of which only lithographs were produced). The sketches were created at the end of May/beginning of June 1907 and again towards the end of July/beginning of August, when the author of the book and Giacometti were travelling together by bicycle and on foot in Ticino and neighbouring Upper Italy.

Stauffer A84) and 3 sketches of which no lithographs were made and which are therefore not mentioned in Stauffer: "Sotto i pergolati"; "Retour de la Messe" and an untitled mountain landscape.

Ein Blatt montiert. Ein Blatt mit Papierverlust in der unteren, rechten Ecke und auf der Rückseite mit einer seitenverkehrten Darstellung. Meist mit Reissnagellöchlein in den Ecken und mit Atelierspuren. Farbfrisch und in sehr gutem Zustand

Erläuterungen

Die Werke entstanden im Rahmen der Illustrationen zu Daniel Baud-Bovys Roman "Vacances d’Artistes". Das Buch erschien 1909 in Genf. Es enthält 27 Farblithographien „hors-texte“, 10 von Édouard Baud, 4 von Louis Dunki, 2 von Jules Fontanez, 10 von Giovanni Giacometti und 1 von Édouard Vallet. Als Vorlagen für diese farbigen Lithographien lieferte Giacometti im August 1907 dem Verleger Max Girardet, Direktor von Sonor, Zeichnungen in Aquarell über Bleistift. Diese Vorarbeiten wurden dann von einem Lithographen des Verlages auf Stein übertragen. Ausser den 10 in der Publikation abgebildeten Lithographien entwarf Giacometti noch weitere Blätter, die aber im Buch keine Verwendung fanden (6 davon sind bei Stauffer aufgeführt, von denen nur Lithographien erstellt wurden). Die Entwürfe entstanden Ende Mai/Anfang Juni 1907 und nochmals gegen Ende Juli/Anfang August, als der Autor des Buches und Giacometti zusammen mit dem Fahrrad und zu Fuss im Tessin und angrenzenden Oberitalien unterwegs waren.
