On beige laid paper with watermark "INGRES / FRANCE" and "AL", the paper minimally browned. In the original condition, without any restorations. In very good overall condition. Approaches to a discarded drawing in charcoal on the reverse side

Comments

The groundbreaking "invention" of collage in 1912 by Georges Braque and Pablo Picasso marked the beginning of a radical change, literally a revolution, in the history of Western art, without which many subsequent movements would not have been possible. By gluing fragments of paper (newspapers, wallpaper and wood-grain paper) onto still-life compositions, "real" materials and textures were introduced into art, which had hitherto been based on illusionistic representations of them

Through this "invention", artists declared the "autonomy" of the painted or drawn artwork, thus detaching it from any attempt at pure representation. The collaged elements rarely followed the contours or silhouettes of the drawn motifs (glasses, bottles, musical instruments or chessboards) and thus virtually countered the conventional means of modelling and depth perspective

"Verre et Bouteille (FOURRURES)" is one of the most impressive examples of Braque's collages ever - both in terms of format, conservation and the level of detail of execution. The sheet was owned by the most important dealer of the Cubists, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, whose holdings were sold in several sequester auctions from 1921 onwards as "enemy property" in Paris after the First World War. From 1923, the collage was in the collection of Raoul La Roche (1889-1965), one of the greatest patrons and collectors of the Cubists in Paris. This provenance impressively demonstrates its importance in the artist's oeuvre. It is still in the family through inheritance and is now coming onto the market for the first time in almost 100 years

Auf beigem Bütten mit Wasserzeichen "INGRES / FRANCE" und "AL", das Papier minim gebräunt. In der originalen Erhaltung, ohne jegliche Restaurierungen. In sehr guter Gesamterhaltung. Rückseitig Ansätze zu einer verworfenen Zeichnung in Kohle

Erläuterungen

Die bahnbrechende "Erfindung" der Collage im Jahr 1912 durch Georges Braque und Pablo Picasso markiert den Beginn eines radikalen Wandels, ja förmlich einer Revolution in der westlichen Kunstgeschichte, ohne die viele Folgeströmungen nicht möglich geworden wären. Durch das Aufkleben von Papierfragmenten (Zeitungen, Tapeten und Papier mit Holzmaserung) auf Stilllebenkompositionen wurden "reale" Materialien und Texturen in die Kunst eingeführt, die bis dato auf illusionistischen Darstellungen derselben basiert

Durch diese "Invention" erklärten die Künstler die "Autonomie" des gemalten oder gezeichneten Kunstwerks und lösten es so von jedem Versuch der reinen Repräsentation. Die collagierten Elemente folgten selten den Konturen oder Silhouetten der gezeichneten Motive (Gläser, Flaschen, Musikinstrumente oder Schachbretter) und konterkarierten so quasi die konventionellen Mittel der Modellierung und Tiefenperspektive

"Verre et Bouteille (FOURRURES)" gehört zu den eindrücklichsten Beispielen von Braques Collagen überhaupt – sowohl was das Format, die Erhaltung als auch den detaillierten Ausführungsgrad anbelangt. Das Blatt befand sich im Eigentum des wichtigsten Händlers der Kubisten, Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, dessen Bestände ab 1921 in mehreren Sequesterauktionen als "Feindesbesitz" in Paris nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg verkauft wurden. Ab 1923 befindet sich die Collage in der Sammlung von Raoul La Roche (1889-1965), einem der grössten Förderer und Sammler der Kubisten in Paris. Diese Provenienz belegt eindrücklich die Wichtigkeit im Œuvre des Künstlers. Bis heute befindet sie sich durch Erbschaft in Familienbesitz und kommt nun erstmals seit fast 100 Jahren auf den Markt
