On wove paper (papier vélin) "Arches", with watermark, fresh in colour and in a very nice condition.

Comments

The motif was used both as a poster with text for the premiere of Mozart's "Magic Flute" on 19 February 1967 at the Metropolitan Opera, where Chagall created the set and costumes, and as a separate lithograph without text. The present sheet is an artist's copy numbered to 50, outside the edition of 200 copies without text. Charles Sorlier produced this lithograph from a section of the model for "Les sources de la musique", one of the two large stage designs for the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

Erläuterungen

Das Motiv wurde sowohl als Plakat mit Text für die Uraufführung von Mozarts "Zauberflöte" am 19. Februar 1967 an der Metropolitan Opera verwendet, wo Chagall das Bühnenbild und die Kostüme schuf, als auch als Separatlithographie ohne Text. Das vorliegende Blatt ist ein auf 50 nummeriertes Künstlerexemplar, ausserhalb der Auflage von 200 Exemplaren ohne Text. Charles Sorlier realisierte diese Lithographie nach einem Ausschnitt aus dem Modell für "Les sources de la musique", einem der beiden grossen Bühnenbilder für die Metropolitan Opera in New York
