Commentaires

In the last years of his life, Jawlensky suffered from severe rheumatoid arthritis, which made it increasingly difficult for him to work at the easel. He was also banned from exhibiting his work in Wiesbaden and became very withdrawn. As paralysis made it increasingly impossible for him to paint round shapes, he reduced his "heads" to horizontal, vertical and oblique brushstrokes and called them "meditations". In 1938 he wrote in a letter to the painter and Father Willibrord Verkade: "I could no longer hold the brush in one hand, I had to use both hands, always with great pain. My format became very small, I also had to find a new technique. For three years I painted these little abstract heads like a man possessed." Due to his illness, Jawlensky created a completely new form of expression of the head motif, characterised by extreme simplification. The painting offered here is a particularly profound and compact "meditation" from 1937

Erläuterungen

In den letzten Lebensjahren litt Jawlensky an einer schweren, rheumatischen Arthritis, die es ihm zusehends schwer machte, an der Staffelei zu arbeiten. Zudem belegt mit einem Ausstellungsverbot, zog er sich in Wiesbaden stark zurück. Da ihm Lähmungserscheinungen mehr und mehr verunmöglichten, runde Formen zu malen, reduzierte er seine "Köpfe" auf horizontale, vertikale und schräge Pinselstriche und nannte sie "Meditationen". Er schrieb 1938 in einem Brief an den Maler und Pater Willibrord Verkade: "Ich konnte den Pinsel nicht mehr in einer Hand halten, musste beide Hände dazu nehmen, immer mit grossen Schmerzen. Mein Format wurde ganz klein, auch musste ich eine neue Technik finden. Drei Jahre malte ich diese kleinen abstrakten Köpfe wie ein Besessener." Bedingt durch die Krankheit erschuf Jawlensky eine komplett neue, durch extreme Vereinfachung geprägte Ausdrucksform des Kopfmotivs. Das hier angebotene Bild ist eine besonders tiefgründige und kompakte "Meditation" aus dem Jahr 1937
