Max Pechstein discovered Leba on the coast of Eastern Pomerania in the spring of 1921. The small Baltic seaside resort with its large harbour and the surrounding landscape were quickly to become the motif for over 50 oil paintings. This is a study for a larger painting from the same year, which is now in the collection of the Kunstmuseum in Zwickau. In both works, Pechstein sets the scene for the wooden bridge in a monumental way by letting the viewer look at the structure from below. The viewer is so close to the water that he can see the fish in it. The bridge spans the Mühlgraben, a small canal in the north of the village that also serves as a harbour and connects Sarbsk Lake with the outflow of the Leba from Lake Leba into the Baltic Sea

Erläuterungen

Max Pechstein entdeckte Leba an der Küste von Ostpommern im Frühjahr 1921. Das kleine Ostseebad mit seinem grossen Hafen und die umliegende Landschaft sollten rasch Motiv für über 50 Ölgemälde werden. Vorliegend ist eine Studie zu einem grösseren Gemälde aus dem gleichen Jahr, das sich heute in der Sammlung des Kunstmuseums in Zwickau befindet. In beiden Werken setzt Pechstein die Holzbrücke monumental in Szene, indem er den Betrachter das Bauwerk von unten erblicken lässt. Der Betrachter ist dem Wasser so nahe, dass er die Fische darin sehen kann. Die Brücke überspannt den Mühlgraben, einen kleinen Kanal im Norden der Ortschaft, der auch als Hafen dient und der den Sarbskersee mit dem Ausfluss der Leba aus dem Lebasee in die Ostsee verbindet
