Condition

Superb impression with plenty of tone. A tear in the upper right margin expertly restored. Very nice overall impression.

Commentaires

In most cases, the print is only delicately printed. In this exceptional early print, the clear drypoint accents enliven the depiction, while the subtle plate tone lends unity to the composition.

Long misinterpreted as a scene from the Old Testament, such as the burial of Jacob, it was not until 1939 that the burial of Christ was identified as the subject. Rembrandt probably modelled the depiction on an engraving by Giovanni Battista Franco. The dating of the sheet was also unclear for a long time; it is now thought to date from around 1645. Apart from stylistic reasons, this is supported by the fact that Rembrandt signed both the "Entombment" and the 1645 etching "Abraham and Isaac" (Bartsch 34) without the "d" in his name.

Superber Abdruck mit reichlich Ton. Ein Einriss oben im rechten Rand fachmännisch restauriert. Im Gesamteindruck sehr schön.

Erläuterungen

In den meisten Fällen druckt das Blatt nur zart. Bei diesem aussergewöhnlichen Frühdruck beleben die deutlichen Kaltnadelakzente die Darstellung, während der subtile Plattenton der Komposition Einheitlichkeit verleiht.

Lange wurde die Darstellung falsch als eine Szene des Alten Testaments gedeutet, etwa als Beisetzung Jacobs, bis 1939 die Grablegung Christi als Thema erkannt wurde. Vermutlich folgte Rembrandt einem Kupferstich Giovanni Battista Francos als Vorbild für die Darstellung. Unklar war lange auch die Datierung des Blattes, heute wird es um 1645 angesetzt. Neben stilistischen Gründen spricht dafür, dass Rembrandt die "Grabtragung" ebenso wie die 1645 datierte Radierung "Abraham und Isaac" (Bartsch 34) ohne das "d" in seinem Namen signierte.
