Towards the end of 1977, it became known in Basel that the Kunstmuseum Basel had purchased the installation "Feuerstätte" by Joseph Beuys for the sum of CHF 300,000. This led to heated public discussions and a press polemic. The subject commission of the Basel carnival clique "Alti Richtig" then decided to use the "Feuerstätte" as a carnival subject. The young architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron contacted Beuys, who, with his sure sense of publicity, immediately offered his collaboration and provided a felt suit designed in 1970 as a model for all the costumes of the clique (vortrab, tambourines, pipers) (see Schellmann 23). The costumes were copied in industrial felt, exactly according to the pattern.

The "Feuerstätte" was copied for the carnival procession on Monday and Wednesday afternoons, the vanguard carried the copper rods and pushed the small cart along as a prop. Beuys came to Basel, was thrilled and accompanied the clique (not in costume, but in fur coats and felt hats) on Wednesday afternoon. On the way, there was another happening: the clique's big lantern suddenly caught fire and was extinguished with Beuys's active help, it was "Feuerstätte III". Towards evening, the clique moved into the courtyard of the Kunstmuseum and handed over "Feuerstätte II", now fully accepted by Beuys as a work, to the head of the Kupferstichkabinett of the public art museum, Dr. Dieter Koepplin, where it has been kept ever since. As a sign of acceptance of Joseph Beuys' work, he signed individual ones of the felt costumep. The present copy is one of the few that has survived with a signature

Gegen Ende 1977 wurde in Basel bekannt, dass das Kunstmuseum Basel für die Summe von CHF 300'000.- die Installation "Feuerstätte" von Joseph Beuys angekauft hat. Das führte in der Öffentlichkeit zu heftigen Diskussionen und einer Pressepolemik. Die Sujetkommission der Basler Fasnachtsclique "Alti Richtig" entschloss sich darauf die "Feuerstätte" als Fasnachtssujet auszuspielen. Die jungen Architekten Jacques Herzog und Pierre de Meuron nahmen mit Beuys Kontakt auf, der mit seinem sicheren Gefühl für Publizität sofort seine Mitarbeit in Aussicht stellte und als Vorlage für alle Kostüme der Clique (Vortrab, Tambouren, Pfeifer) einen 1970 konzipierten Filzanzug zur Verfügung stellte (siehe Schellmann 23). In Industriefilz, genau nach der Vorlage, wurden die Kostüme kopiert.

Die "Feuerstätte" wurde für den Fasnachtsumzug am Montag und Mittwochnachmittag kopiert, der Vortrab trug die Kupferstäbe und schob den kleinen Karren als Requisit mit. Beuys kam nach Basel, war begeistert und begleitete die Clique (nicht in Kostüm, aber in Pelzmantel und mit Filzhut) am Mittwochnachmittag. Unterwegs gab es noch ein Happening, die grosse Laterne der Clique fing plötzlich Feuer und wurde mit tatkräftiger Hilfe von Beuys gelöscht, es war die "Feuerstätte III". Gegen Abend zog die Clique in den Hof des Kunstmuseums und übergab die "Feuerstätte II", nun von Beuys als Werk voll akzeptiert, dem Leiter des Kupferstichkabinetts des öffentlichen Kunstmuseums, Dr. Dieter Koepplin, wo sie seither aufbewahrt wird. Zum Zeichen der Akzeptanz des Werkes von Joseph Beuys signierte er einzelne der Filzkostüme. Das vorliegende Exemplar ist eines der wenigen, das sich mit Signatur erhalten hat
