"L'Apparition", the apparition, is a reminiscence of the so-called "black period" of the symbolist Odilon Redon, in which he devoted himself to the human unconscious with its fears and nightmares, creating haunting, sometimes eerie works. Alec Wildenstein describes the painting as follows: "A thin man - shivering with cold or fear? - shivering with cold or fear, flying or frantic little heads without bodies appear in an eerie room painted in the colours of clay and hell, death and decay."

Redon was concerned with an atmospheric fantasy in which everything is seemingly normal, but the strange is invisible, intangible and yet frightening. The strangeness becomes more and more unbearable as one advances into the realm of madness, confusion, delirium, the most grotesque and horrible nightmares in which a person's obsessive fears drive him to the brink of death. Disguised as a ghost, larva or spirit, the latter returns to haunt the nights of the survivors

Ian Woodner, a New York real estate developer, was one of the biggest art collectors in the United States. His passion was essentially for the paintings, drawings and prints of the French artist Odilon Redon, and he successively assembled the world's largest group of works by the artist. After Woodner's death in 1990, his two daughters, Dian and Andrea, took over the Ian Woodner Family Collection and donated nearly a hundred paintings, pastels, watercolours, drawings, prints and illustrated books by Redon to the Museum of Modern Art.

Erläuterungen

"L'Apparition", die Erscheinung, stellt eine Reminiszenz an die sog. "schwarze Periode" des Symbolisten Odilon Redon dar, in der er sich dem menschlichen Unbewussten mit seinen Ängsten und Albträumen widmete und dabei eindringliche, teilweise unheimliche Werke schuf. Alec Wildenstein beschreibt das Gemälde wie folgt: "Einem dünnen, - vor Kälte oder Angst? - zitternden Mann erscheinen in einem unheimlichen Raum, der in den Farben von Lehm und Hölle, Tod und Verwesung gehalten ist, fliegende oder rasende kleine Köpfe ohne Körper."

Redon ging es um eine atmosphärische Fantasie, in der alles scheinbar normal ist, das Fremde aber unsichtbar, nicht greifbar und dennoch beängstigend. Das Fremde wird immer unerträglicher, je weiter man in den Bereich des Wahnsinns vordringt, der Verwirrung, des Deliriums, der grotesksten und schrecklichsten Albträume, in denen die obsessiven Ängste eines Menschen ihn bis an die Seite des Todes treiben. Als Gespenst, Larve oder Geist verkleidet kehrt dieser zurück, um die Nächte der Überlebenden heimzusuchen

Ian Woodner, ein New Yorker Immobilienentwickler, war einer der grössten Kunstsammler der Vereinigten Staaten. Seine Leidenschaft galt im Wesentlichen den Gemälden, Zeichnungen und Drucken des französischen Künstlers Odilon Redon, und er stellte sukzessive die weltweit grösste Gruppe von Werken des Künstlers zusammen. Nach dem Tod Woodners 1990 übernahmen die beiden Töchter, Dian und Andrea, die Ian Woodner Family Collection und schenkten dem Museum of Modern Art fast hundert Gemälde, Pastelle, Aquarelle, Zeichnungen, Drucke und illustrierte Bücher von Redon
