Henri Rousseau had grown fond of the commune of Malakoff, at that time a small suburb of Paris. It was here that his daughter Julia, born in 1875, was placed in the care of the Breton wet nurse, Madame Raynal, as his wife Clémence was suffering from tuberculosis. Julia was the only one of numerous siblings to survive childhood and remained closely connected to her father for the rest of her life after the early death of her mother in 1888.

The painting depicts a picturesque view of the community in the south-west of Paris. It is an almost idealised world with clean air in contrast to city life with cramped living conditions and a lack of hygiene. According to Yann Le Pichon, Rousseau may have identified with one of the strolling figures on the country road. From 1871 to 1893, he worked as an excise inspector in inland customs, hence his nickname "Le Douanier", and often saw such landscapes just outside Paris.

Erläuterungen

Die Gemeinde Malakoff, damals ein kleiner Vorort von Paris, war Henri Rousseau ans Herz gewachsen. Hier wurde seine 1875 geborene Tochter Julia in die Obhut der bretonischen Amme, Madame Raynal, gegeben, da seine Frau Clémence an Tuberkulose erkrankt war. Julia überlebte als einzige von zahlreichen Geschwistern die Kindheit und blieb nach dem frühen Tod ihrer Mutter 1888 zeitlebens eng mit dem Vater verbunden.

Das Gemälde gibt eine pittoreske Sicht auf die Gemeinde im Südwesten von Paris wieder. Eine geradezu heile Welt mit sauberer Luft im Vergleich zum Stadtleben mit engen Wohnverhältnissen und mangelnder Hygiene. Laut Yann Le Pichon könnte sich Rousseau mit einer der spazierenden Figuren auf der Landstrasse identifiziert haben. Von 1871 bis 1893 arbeitete er als Akzisenkontrolleur im Binnenzoll, daher auch sein Übername "Le Douanier", und bekam solche Landschaften vor den Toren Paris oft zu sehen.
