On strong wove paper (papier vélin) with a few creases. Colour fresh and in very good condition. With surrounding adhesive tape on the back

Comments

The present work appears to be a study of the left side of the painting of the same name (Jornod CR no. 138). It shows two fused and entwined figures (probably a couple). Two hands extend downwards from these figures with geometric bodies, a third hand can be seen to the left of the head. At the lower edge of the picture there is a reddish-yellow rope

The work can be classified in the artistic work phase of the "Femmes", which lasted from 1932 to 1940. During this period, Le Corbusier created numerous works in which women's faces, hands and bodies play a role. He is newly married to Yvonne (cf. lot 931 with the marriage announcements on the reverse) and they both spend the summer in Le Piquey in the Bay of Arcachon. He takes up the motif of the ropes from the fishing boats there: it has a symbolic meaning for the artist

Erläuterungen

Die vorliegende Arbeit scheint eine Studie zur linken Seite des gleichnamigen Gemäldes (Jornod WK Nr. 138) zu sein. Sie zeigt zwei verschmolzene und umschlungene Figuren (wohl ein Paar). Von diesen Figuren mit geometrischen Körpern gehen nach unten zwei Hände ab, eine dritte Hand erkennt man links vom Kopf. Am unteren Rand des Bildes befindet sich ein rotgelbes Tau

Das Werk lässt sich in die künstlerische Werkphase der "Femmes" einordnen, die von 1932 bis 1940 anhielt. In dieser Zeit schuf Le Corbusier zahlreiche Arbeiten bei denen Frauengesichter, Hände, Körper eine Rolle spielen. Er ist frisch mit Yvonne verheiratet (vgl. Los 931 mit den Ehebekanntmachungen auf der Rückseite) und beide verbringen den Sommer in Le Piquey in der Bucht von Arcachon.
