Lake Thun with the Stockhorn mountain range was one of Hodler's favourite subjects. In the entire landscape series of the Stockhorn chain, the present work is remarkable for the dense wall of clouds that frames the motif. Its corporeal appearance and the broad contours of the segmental arch imitate the course and plasticity of the mountain range. This correspondence is an expression of the parallelistic order that Ferdinand Hodler depicted in numerous paintings (cf. "Das Jungfraumassiv von Mürren aus", 1914, Bätschmann/Müller 511). The solid and the ephemeral, as opposing elements, thus refer to each other through repetition (from: Catalogue raisonné, p. 387/407). The contrast between the calm surface of the lake in the foreground and the dynamic background is also fascinating.

Erläuterungen

Der Thunersee mit Stockhornkette gehörte zu Hodlers bevorzugten Sujets. In der gesamten Landschaftsserie der Stockhornketten fällt im vorliegenden Werk die dichte, das Motiv hinterfangende Wolkenwand auf. Ihre körperhafte Erscheinung und die breit angelegte Konturierung des Segmentbogens imitieren den Verlauf und die Plastizität des Gebirgszuges. Diese Entsprechung ist Ausdruck der parallelistischen Ordnung, die Ferdinand Hodler in zahlreichen Gemälden darlegte (vgl. "Das Jungfraumassiv von Mürren aus", 1914, Bätschmann/Müller 511). Festes und Flüchtiges sind somit als gegensätzliche Elemente durch Wiederholung aufeinander bezogen (aus: Catalogue raisonné, S. 387/407). Spannend ist auch der Kontrast zwischen der ruhigen Seeoberfläche im Vordergrund und dem dynamischen Hintergrund.
