In contrast to his contemporaries Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley, Auguste Renoir showed little interest in still life at the beginning of his career. From around 1880, however, it became increasingly important in his work and emphasised the "academic" approach that influenced his art. The artist, who was famous for his expressive portraits and lively scenes in nature, turned to still life painting as it was an exercise in light, colour and form and also sold very well. In his late still life compositions, Renoir carried out some of his most thorough research into the effects of light and colour on objects and surfaces.

The still life with three pomegranates and two apples offered here is a fine example of Renoir's late painting technique and his ability to capture a few apples on a table with just a few brushstrokes. Five freshly picked fruits lie on a finely draped tablecloth. The light penetrates the still life and fills the scene with an atmospheric aura.

Erläuterungen

Im Gegensatz zu seinen Zeitgenossen Claude Monet oder Alfred Sisley zeigte Auguste Renoir zu Beginn seiner Karriere wenig Interesse am Stillleben. Ab etwa 1880 nimmt es jedoch einen immer grösseren Stellenwert in seinem Schaffen ein und unterstreicht den "akademischen" Ansatz, der seine Kunst beeinflusst. Der Künstler, der für seine ausdrucksstarken Porträts und lebhaften Szenen in der Natur berühmt war, wandte sich der Stilllebenmalerei zu, da sie eine Übung in Licht, Farbe und Form darstellte und sich zudem noch sehr gut verkaufen liess. In seinen späten Stilllebenkompositionen hat Renoir einige seiner gründlichsten Untersuchungen über die Wirkung von Licht und Farbe auf Gegenstände und Oberflächen durchgeführt.

Das hier angebotene Stillleben mit drei Granatäpfeln und zwei Äpfeln ist ein schönes Beispiel für Renoirs späte Maltechnik und seine Fähigkeit, ein paar Äpfel auf einem Tisch mit wenigen Pinselstrichen einzufangen. Auf einer fein drapierten Tischdecke liegen fünf frisch gepflückte Früchte. Das Licht durchdringt das Stillleben und erfüllt die Szene mit einer atmosphärischen Ausstrahlung.
